# The Nexus Lecture Series – Dr. Shefali

On Saturday, May 25, Dr. Shefali gave a riveting presentation on her approach to parenting in the third installment of The Nexus Lecture Series. Her talk, entitled The Conscious Parent after her *New York Times* bestselling book, was a bracing, thoroughgoing, and often very funny dissection of the enculturated fears and values that often plague parents and what parents can do to overcome them. The development of an authentic relationship with ones children, according to Dr. Shefali, is the true nature of parenting and to do so one must live as an authentic individual. "Biology does not make a parent," says Dr. Shefali, "Biology makes conception. A parent truly raises themselves."
