Grade 2 Spotlight: Earth Systems Investigations

Eggs 2

Things have literally been cracking up and exploding this week in Grade 2! Second graders have had a busy week doing lots of science activities. They worked with hard-boiled eggs to understand tectonic plates and the Earth's different layers. First, they tapped eggs to crack the shell. Students then compared the cracks in the shell to cracks in the crust of the Earth. They traced the cracked lines and imagined those were the edges of the plates in Earth's crust. Students then cut their eggs in half and compared the shell, the white, and the yolk to the crust, mantle, and core. This week Grade 2 also learned about Earthquakes and volcanoes. Students had fun working with a partner from 2B to make their own mini exploding volcano. There were cheers of delight in the classroom as each student pair watched their volcano explode!
